ACADEMIC AND CLINICAL PARTNERSHIPS In addition to its innovative product development programs, ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals assists key scientists in leading research institutions, advancing their research by applying business and strategic marketing support. ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals has provided funding for research operations at the University of Southern California (USC) and Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Göteborg, Sweden, in addition to other sites, to enable development and testing of drug candidates in both preclinical and clinical settings. University of Southern California Los Angeles, California The University of Southern California is a major center for basic and clinical biomedical research in the field of cancer. Under an Option and License Agreement with USC, ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals obtained an exclusive right to intellectual property related to anticancer agents, CoFactor and organoselenones. CoFactor was developed by researchers at the University of Southern California (USC) and Sahlgrenska University Hospital who discovered its ability to enhance 5-FU's inhibition of a key enzyme, thymidylate synthase (TS). ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals is the exclusive licensee of a patent that encompasses the use of carbon-oxygen-selenium compounds as anticancer agents, as well as the method for their synthesis. ADVENTRX Pharmaceuticals also holds an exclusive license from USC to intellectual property related to thiophosphonoformate and a new platform technology enabling the targeted delivery of pharmaceutical compounds. The license grants rights to patents, which enable the sale and manufacture of thiophosphonoformate and thiophosphonoformate analogues for treatment of viral infections as well as new inventions related to antiviral therapy and drug delivery. Dr. Charles McKenna, Professor of Chemistry at USC, is the inventor of thiophosphonoformate. Sahlgrenska University Hospital Göteborg, Sweden Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Göteborg, Sweden is one of only six training hospitals in Sweden. This institution is well known for its research programs and strong reputation with patients and colleagues around the world. Sahlgrenska University Hospital was the site for initial CoFactor clinical studies. A Phase 1/2 clinical trial using CoFactor in combination with 5-FU was performed at the hospital under the direction of Drs. Bengt Gustavsson and Göran Carlsson, in collaboration with Dr. Colin Paul Spears (formerly at USC). Drs. Gustavsson and Spears are the co-inventors of this technology. |
